New SERGG President
Meet our new President!

Katy Phelan, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Cytogenetics Lab at Hayward Genetics Center at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and is Certified by the America Board of Medical Genetics as a Clinical Cytogenetics and as a Ph.D. Medical Geneticist. Her interests include defining phenotype/genotype correlations in individuals with deletion 22q13 (Phelan-McDermid syndrome) and longitudinal studies to characterize the natural history of Phelan-McDermid syndrome. In 1998, she organized the first 22q13 Deletion Syndrome Support Group Meeting and is the founder of the the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation (originally known as the 22q13 Deletion Foundation). She works closely with parents and board members to educate the medical community and raise awareness of this rare chromosome disorder. In the laboratory she is focused on improving the detection of cytogenetic abnormalities in cancer patients through the implementation of new technologies.
