Meet Our President: J. Dan Sharer, PhD

J. Daniel Sharer received his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular biology from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University.  He \

received postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute and the Departments of Biochemistry and Human Genetics at Emory University.  He is certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in Clinical Biochemical Genetics, and is a current or former member of the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (SIMD) and the American Society of Mass Spectrometry (ASMS). He has served on many regional and national councils and committees, including the ABMGG Board of Directors and the ACGME Medical Genetics and Genomics Review Committee, and also served as the President of SERGG from 2018 – 2020.

Dr. Sharer has been awarded grant support and training awards from the National Institutes of Health, the ACMG Foundation, the UAB Health Service Foundation, SIMD/Ucyclyd, the National Cancer Institute, and the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research.  He has served as a consultant to Atherotech Diagnostics and is a former editor for Current Protocols in Human Genetics.  He has published many manuscripts and abstracts as well as three book chapters.

Dr. Sharer is currently a tenured Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Director of the Genetics Research Division. He is the founding Director of the UAB Biochemical Genetics and Metabolic Disease Laboratory and Director of the UAB Clinical Biochemical Genetics fellowship training program.

SERGG’s Immediate Past President

Meet Our Immediate Past President: Hans C. Andersson, MD, FACMG

Hans C. Andersson received his BS in Music and Psychology and his MD from Tulane University. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at the Tulane School of Medicine and Clinical Genetics and Clinical Biochemical Genetics fellowships at the National Institutes of Health at the Hayward Genetics Center. As an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, he worked for two years in the lysosomal labs at University of Göttingen, Germany.

Dr. Andersson is the Karen Gore Chair of Human Genetics and Director of the Hayward Genetics Center at the Tulane University Medical School where he directs the Biochemical Genetics Lab and a clinical team of clinicians, genetic counselors and metabolic nutritionists. He has been active in SERGG since the late 1990s and was past President in 2006-08. He was Co-PI of the SouthEast Regional Network from 2005- 2024. His research has elucidated clinical features and pathophysiology of inherited metabolic genetic disorders. He is the past Chair of the National Coordinating Center Telegenetics Workgroup and a member of the Disaster Preparedness Workgroup. Dr. Andersson has been a life-long resident of New Orleans and played a critical role in the reestablishment of clinical genetics in Louisiana following hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
